How to Choose the Right Drill Press Guard: OSHA Requirements, Guard Types & Sizing Guide

Introduction

Drill presses are among the most common machines in metal fabrication shops, machine shops, and industrial facilities — and among the most frequently cited by OSHA for inadequate guarding. A rotating chuck, exposed drill bit, and flying chips create real point-of-operation hazards that a properly selected guard eliminates.

Under 29 CFR 1910.212, OSHA requires that all machines with point-of-operation hazards be guarded to prevent operator contact. For drill presses, that means a guard that covers the rotating chuck and bit while still allowing the operator to feed the workpiece and see the cut.

This guide walks through everything you need to select the right guard for your machine: OSHA requirements, guard types, sizing, interlock options, and replacement shield intervals.

OSHA Requirements for Drill Press Guarding

29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1) states that one or more methods of machine guarding must be provided to protect operators and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips, and sparks.

For drill presses specifically, the point of operation is the area where the drill bit contacts the workpiece — directly below the rotating chuck. An OSHA-compliant guard must:

  • Prevent the operator's hands from contacting the rotating chuck or bit during normal operation
  • Contain or deflect flying chips and coolant
  • Allow clear visibility of the cutting area
  • Not create new hazards (pinch points, snagging surfaces, etc.)
  • Remain in place during operation and be adjustable for different workpiece heights

OSHA compliance is not optional — citations for inadequate drill press guarding carry penalties that can reach thousands of dollars per violation, and repeat violations are penalized at significantly higher rates. For government, aerospace, and defense facilities, guarding compliance is also a contractual requirement under most facility safety programs.

Types of Drill Press Guards

Not all drill press guards are built the same.  You may see other guards that only cover the drill chuck, and not the point of operation - the drill bit.  The right type depends on your machine's column diameter, the size of the machine, and your facility's interlock requirements.

Heavy Duty Column-Clamp Guards, Swing Away Shield, Interlock Optional — DPG-1 and DPG-2

The most robust category of drill press guard clamps directly to the machine's round column using a 2-piece billet aluminum clamp, and is designed to clear most gear racks on the side. Two articulating arms extend from the column clamp and position a polycarbonate shield directly over the point of operation.  The Heavy Duty guards feature 100% billet aluminum parts and are available with or without a safety interlock switch.

Both guards feature a polycarbonate shield that provides chip containment and clear visibility, and both are available with an optional safety interlock switch that cuts machine power when the guard is swung open.

Econ-Series Column-Clamp Guards, Flip Up Shield — DPG-ES1 and DPG-ES2

The Drill Press Guard - Econ-Series is a lightweight, fast-install guard designed for production environments where guards are frequently re-positioned. Available in two sizes (DPG-ES1 and DPG-ES2), the Econ-Series mounts to the drill press column and uses a friction-lock articulating arm to position the shield quickly without tools.   The econ-series feature CNC machined billet aluminum clamps, but have aluminum extrusion arms.

The DPG-ES1 fits machines with column diameters of 2.0 - 4.0", but if your column diameter is right at 4.0", we can supply a 2" longer arm on the DPG-ES1.   The DPG-ES2 fits machines with column diameters of 4.0 - 6.5" and features a taller/wider shield.

Universal Mount Guards (No Round Column) — MG-4

The Universal Mount Mill, Drill, and Radial Drill Machine Guard (MG-4) is designed for machines with no round column. It mounts to mills, drill presses, and radial arm drills using a universal 4-bolt, 4 x 4 inch mounting plate.   Unlike the previous 2 styles, this one does require you to drill and tap at least 2 holes into the side of the machine to mount it.   There are multiple arm lengths available based on the machine measurements you supply.   Available in standard and interlocked versions.

How to Size a Drill Press Guard

Selecting the correct guard size requires two key measurements from your machine:

  1. Column diameter: This one usually determines the guard.  Measure the diameter of the round column. The guard's clamp system must fit your column. Most standard drill presses have columns ranging from 2" to 4" in diameter, but it may be larger.
  2. Throat Distance: Measure the distance from the front of the round column to the drill bit.  This is called the throat.   The articulating arm must be long enough to keep the shield positioned at the point of operation while allowing adjustment for clearance.

Standard vs. Interlocked Guards: When You Need a Safety Switch

All ATS drill press guards are available in two configurations: standard (guard only) and interlocked (guard with a safety interlock switch).

A safety interlock switch is wired into the machine's power circuit, and will often require a new motor starter or contactor to make it function correctly. When the guard is open, the switch cuts power to the motor — the machine cannot run without the guard in place. When the guard is closed, power is restored and the machine operates normally once the operator initiates a "start" or "run" button.  You must never wire it so that the machine starts back up automatically when the guard is closed.  There must be an operator push button to manually start the spindle again.

When interlocks are required:

  • Many aerospace, defense, and corporate safety programs require interlocked guarding as a condition of facility certification. Considerations include the frequency of usage of the machine, and the severity of the hazard.
  • ANSI B11.1 (drilling machines) recommends interlocked guards where the guard must be opened for tool changes during production
  • Some OSHA compliance programs and third-party safety audits require interlocks on production drill presses

Installation Overview

ATS drill press guards are designed for fast, tool-minimal installation. Most installs take under 15 minutes with basic hand tools.

  1. Position the column clamp collar onto the drill press column at the desired height — usually right above the gear rack collar.
  2. Tighten the collar clamp to secure the guard to the column. 
  3. Adjust the articulating arm to position the polycarbonate shield directly over the chuck. The arm should be set so the shield's lower edge is approximately 1" above the workpiece surface when the quill is fully retracted.
  4. Verify coverage: With the machine off, cycle the quill through its full travel range and confirm the shield tracks the point of operation throughout the stroke.
  5. If installing an interlocked version: Follow the wiring diagram included with the guard to connect the interlock switch to the machine's power circuit. You must have a qualified electrician, who is experienced in electrical controls, to complete this step.

When to Replace Your Drill Press Guard Shield

The polycarbonate shield is the primary protective element of the guard. Over time, polycarbonate scratches and can develop stress cracks from repeated chip impacts.  It is also weakened by coolants over time. A degraded shield reduces visibility and may no longer provide adequate impact protection.

Replace your shield when:

  • Scratches or hazing reduce visibility through the shield
  • Any cracks, chips, or impact damage are visible

Replacement shields are available for all ATS drill press guard models.  We also stock taller shields, which may be necessary if your machine has an exposed rotating shaft above the drill chuck.
